Recent Work

Instead of utilizing this blog, lately I have been posting on a facebook page...
Lyz Wendland Art

Though I'd like to be posting more process pictures on here again. I'll be playing catch-up for a bit and posting things from the last year (which was busy as far as teaching and art making!)

These images are from my solo show this past spring at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, WI.

"You Can't See Me Here"

I am very inspired by the fence in my back yard as it comments on my ideas of what is public and what is private space. I'm interested in areas of my back yard where no one is able to see me and what that means. What can I do back there? There is a small area behind our garage, where no neighbors or pedestrians are able to see me, only people in my house and if they were looking out a window in our master bedroom. I am curious about this space and how I can challenge it.

Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts...

As mid-semester approaches and things continue to be crazy busy with teaching, I am getting excited for the projects I plan to continue to work on this summer! My ideas of suburbia are continuing to expand and I look forward to start concentrating more on specific ideas.

My current solo show at Augsburg College in Minneapolis has been very helpful as I continue to meet with local artists and curators and receive some helpful and constructive feedback. (will post photos soon)

After a show, I find it helpful to not make work for a while and just let it sit and let my thoughts sit and develop more. But today, am happy to be back in my studio and start working on some new things! Stay tuned...

Maple Grove Mountains

I have always found this area of the suburb, Maple Grove, fascinating. People call these the "sandpits." I sometimes call them the Maple Grove Mountains. I have been waiting for it to snow, to get some shots of them covered in snow...
This is a suburb that grew very quickly, but there are also these areas of open space and sandpits. From many homes, this is the view they see.
