Line Study #3

Line Study #3: Water Towers
I have lots of ideas for this study. Water towers are something that the suburbs have that the city does not. Of course, first off I am interested in the linear qualities that they have. This first project is looking at towers from the 2nd or 3rd tier suburbs as they are a little further out from the city than the 1st tier ones. This mixed media drawing is based off of the Anoka water tower. It was one of the first ones that caught my eye.
I'm curious about the function of the water tower, not just holding water, but proudly displaying the name of the suburb. Many of them are similar but with different attributes, which in a way lead to individual characters.
I'm planning on documenting a lot of the 2nd and 3rd tier towers from different angles to look for other linear qualities.

Line Study #2

The line repetition in our fence has been very influential for this project and I am planning on doing many more studies of the fence as a starting point. The balloons are meant to comment on the idea of tying balloons around your mailbox to let people know where something is located. I realize that happens in other areas besides suburbia, but find that it is more interesting in the suburbs because of the fact that in some neighborhoods many of the houses look very similar.

I am also interested in the idea of the fence. The purpose of privacy and security...

The Surburban Line Project

So I got married and moved to the suburbs, which is usually not something artists are eager to do... I've been thinking of lots of ideas for a while on how to embrace my surrounds and have decided that the suburbs actually need me here. The crazy artist on the corner! I am going to be working on a new project where I focus on the aspect of line in the suburbs, in different tendencies. The formal qualities of line are just the beginning, we will see what it leads to... stay tuned!

Line Study #1

My dog Gordie helped me with parts of this. Experimenting with line on a different surface, color and movement.
